TitleAl-Coranus sive lex Islamitica Muhammedis by Abraham Hinckelmann (Hamburg, 1694)
DescriptionEven though early printed texts of the Qur’an were printed in Europe from the 16th century, the printing of the text of the Qur’an was much slower in the Muslim world. Factors included the necessity for more individual characters (including vowels) to print Arabic texts as well as maintaining the beauty of illumination and calligraphy that is characteristic of Qur’an manuscripts. Printed in Hamburg by Officina Schultzio-Schilleriana, this item is an example of early printed Qur’ans in Europe and is dated 1694.
